Liverpool Museums and Attractions
Museum lovers take note—Liverpool is a veritable museum Mecca. Here are just a few of your choices:
The Beatles' Story
A must see for all Beatles fans, young and old alike. Commentary comes from various people connected to the Beatles, including Sir Paul McCartney, via headsets. There is a small entry fee, and the headsets come at no extra cost.
HM Customs & Excise Museum
Liverpool is a place on the water with what has been, over the years, a very influential port. Like fleas on a dog, ports traditionally suffer from smugglers. At this museum, you can learn about the history of smuggling over the last 400 years. Fascinating for both adults and children, this is a hands-on experience with lots of options. Certainly the most exciting activities at this hand-on museum, which is great for kids of all ages, are trying to identify a suspect package and matching wits with a smuggler.
Museum of Liverpool Life
The Museum of Liverpool Life opened in 1993 on the banks of the River Mersey, in a former boat hall and building used by pilots controlling traffic along the river. The museum and its collections celebrate the people of Liverpool, their culture, achievements and contribution to national life, and give a unique insight into a remarkable city and its inhabitants.
Tate Gallery
Liverpool’s Tate Gallery is a world-class collection of modern art- a pioneer in the field of new creative media.
Mersey Ferries
Stay outside and take a ride on a Mersey Ferry, the oldest ferry service in Europe, where you can see spectacular waterfront views and hear a lively commentary that tells the history of Liverpool and these intrepid river vessels.
Merseyside Maritime Museum
“This is a lovely museum if you are interested in Maritime History,” says one Trip Advisor Member. “Really enjoyed the immigrant and slave history exhibitions. Nice morning or afternoon visit at Albert Dock.”
Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King ( RC )
Pier Head and the Three Graces Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, Port of Liverpool Building
Prescot Clock Museum
Events here are always changing but a favourite activity that’s always available is watching the detailed watch-making process. Want to spend more time outdoors? Simply take a walk. The surrounding historic area is practically a museum itself.
Sudley House
Built in the early 19th century, this Victorian house is surrounded by pleasant gardens and parkland, which displays 18th- and 19th-century paintings from collector George Holt.
World Museum Liverpool
“I recently experienced the wonders of Liverpool Museum,” says one TripAdvisor Member. “I was extremely impressed by the visual elements also the friendly staff who were willing to give us as much information as we needed. Loved the museum, asset to Liverpool”
Philharmonic Hall
Philharmonic Hall is a cultural oasis in the heart of Liverpool's Georgian district, Hope Street. It is home to the world's third oldest music-making organization, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, founded in the 1840s. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra has a great new conductor, Vasily Petrenko, who has been getting rave reviews in the national and international press. The Hall is also very well regarded for its jazz, rock, pop, world music, and film and comedy events. Don't miss its Classic Film series, on the world’s only working Walturdau screen accompanied beforehand by a live performance on the organ.
